Tips & Modern use
Musk originally came from the musk deer, but modern perfumery now relies on synthetic musks. These alternatives are more ethical, sustainable and environmentally friendly, while preserving the depth and softness of natural musk.
Highly valued in the East since Antiquity, musk reached Europe in the 16th century. In Arab culture, it is considered one of the most noble and refined fragrances, symbolising purity and elegance.
In recent years, many perfume houses have brought white musk back into their signature creations.
The essential role of musk in perfumery:
In contemporary perfumery, musk plays a key role.
It acts as:
a powerful fixative, extending the longevity of the fragrance
a stabiliser, harmonising the different notes
a soft, warm base, giving depth and comfort
Musk doesn’t just bind ingredients together — it elevates the entire composition, allowing the fragrance to evolve beautifully on the skin.
Why is white musk so widely used?
White musk is mainly used as a base note, the part of the fragrance that lasts for hours.
A perfume is built around three layers:
Top notes: the first, light impression
Heart notes: the core identity of the fragrance
Base notes: the long‑lasting, deeper notes, often musky
Thanks to its softness and longevity, white musk has become a staple in modern perfumery
